Reading into Writing:
Discrete English and Maths lessons take place in the mornings, either side of morning break. English is delivered through the vehicle of ‘Talk for Writing’ (Pie Corbett approach) - where writing is based upon reading. Units of work and lessons start with enjoying and sharing stories; children then learn the stories and adapt them, eventually writing their own. Planning and teaching follows the route of: Imitation, Innovation and Invention. Through a careful curriculum map, genres and progression are planned right across the school.
As appropriate, some aspects of English teaching are taught separately in smaller focus groups, eg. phonics, handwriting, spelling, grammar and guided reading.
The teaching of phonics follows the 'Letter and Sounds' scheme of work using a synthetic approach. We integrate actions for each grapheme from Jolly Phonics and take some of our activities from Floppy's Phonics. Our individual reading scheme is a mixed syllabus from Oxford Reading Tree, GINN and Collins. Books are banded by colour and children are frequently assessed in their reading and comprehension, and their book colour assigned and adjusted accordingly.
